Following these clues, investigators were trying to crack the mystery surrounding the death of Stamford University student Rubaiyat Sharmin Rumpa.

Twenty-two-year-old Rumpa, a second-year English student of the private university in the capital’s Siddheshwari, was found dead on an alley in the area on Wednesday night. Police learnt about her identity the next day.

Talking to The Daily Star yesterday, a police official involved in the investigation, said Rumpa had gone out of her home on Wednesday evening wearing those slippers.

The official, wishing not to be named, also said there are three buildings near the spot where the body was recovered. They suspect the victim had gone to the rooftop of under-construction 11-storey Ayesha Shopping Complex.

“We searched the area extensively and found footprints on the edge of the rooftop around 3:00am [yesterday],” the official said, adding, pigeons are raised on the rooftop.

He also said there were several gaping holes on the roof and walking on it was risky. “The footprints looked fresh. It seems someone stood on the edge,” he said.

Investigators, however, could not confirm whether it was a case of suicide or murder.

Police said Rumpa gave tuitions to her fourth grader student for an hour since 5:30pm on Wednesday in Shantibagh area and went to her house on the second floor of a building nearby.

She, however, did not go upstairs. She called her mother and asked her to send her cousin downstairs. Rumpa took the slippers from him and gave him her purse where she kept her mobile and money.
