‘AL to pick Barrister Taposh, Atiqul for mayoral race in Dhaka city polls’
Awami League (AL) has unanimously nominated Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and incumbent DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam to contest as the mayoral runners of the party in the elections to the two city corporations of Dhaka, sources said.
The decision was taken during a meeting of Awami League’s local government nomination board with the party’s president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Saturday night.
But the party did not announce the name till filing the report at 9:00pm.
Meanwhile, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters that their party will announce its candidates for the mayoral race in the elections to Dhaka south and north city corporations on Sunday.
The AL leader came up with the announcement while talking to reporters after attending the meeting at Ganabhaban around 8:30 pm.
Meeting sources said that the party gave the opportunity to mayor Atiq as he got less than a year to serve the people of the Dhaka North City Corporation.
The local government nomination board dropped incumbent Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokan for his failure in various fields, including tackling the dengue outbreak of this year.
Instead of Sayeed Khokan, Taposh, a nephew of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and younger son of the Juba League’s founding president Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, has got the AL ticket to contest as the mayoral runner in the elections to the DSCC, sources said.
